Saint Etienne - SOLD OUT
support from The Pastels
The Art School, Glasgow, United Kingdom
An unmissable musical evening in the company of two of the UK’s most seminal independent bands,
The Pastels are a Glasgow-based independent music group whose core members are Stephen McRobbie and Katrina Mitchell. The group's lineage goes all the way back to the early 1980s and a culture of cassettes, fanzines and one-off singles. Now in their third main incarnation, the current sound is influenced by film, theatre and the collaborative music they’ve worked on together with a shared love of the pop moment. Their most recent album, Slow Summits, was shortlisted for the Scottish Album Of The Year award in 2014, and they are about to reconvene for a few shows before starting work on something new for their long-standing label, Domino.
Saint Etienne are a conceptual pop group who are widely considered to be “England’s greatest pop band”. The three members, childhood friends Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs and vocalist Sarah Cracknell have been described as “London’s musical laureates” and “perhaps the only band to capture the teeming variety of the capital.” Pitchfork described the sound of 1991 debut Foxbase Alpha as “an imaginary year-round summer.” The Guardian brought up their “consistently wonderful songwriting.” and declared the band a “national treasure”. Saint Etienne were key contributors to the birth of the 90’s indie dance hybrid movement, have had their songs performed by artists from iconic french singer Etienne Daho to Kylie, been remixed by everyone from Aphex Twin to The Chemical Brothers, released nine albums, had sixteen Top 40 hits, almost as many Top Of The Pops appearances.
